Twitter at The Masters
This could settle the “has Twitter hit the mainstream?” argument once and for all. In a move that is bound to draw praise from social media types and followers of golf alike, The Masters is now on Twitter (@The_Masters).
For me, there’s nothing like a lazy Sunday afternoon watching one of golf’s majors – i.e. watching Tiger Woods storms his way to yet another victory. However, sometimes life and schedules get in the way and I can’t always be in front of a TV, lounging on the couch. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry so much about that anymore.
Fans will now be able to keep up with real-time action over the weekend by following @The_Masters on Twitter. Turn on SMS updates and there’s no need to proactively look to see how many strokes Tiger has on the rest of the field.
Based on what I’ve been able to deduce so far, there seem to be at least two people updating the Twitter account, one from the Web and one from the popular iPhone app, Twitteriffic. (Speaking of the iPhone, The Masters has also released a Masters iPhone app for fans to keep track of the tournament as well). It would make sense to have a handful of people on key holes around the course on Saturday and Sunday when every stroke counts.
Subjects of the tweets range from the obvious updates on players, shots and scores all the way to more atmospheric things like the concessions at the tournament:
Lunchtime: Egg salad & pimento cheese sandwiches are still $1.50, but gone are temp consession stands. New buildings house the light fare.
The Twitter account already has 22,217 followers as of Noon ET on April 9 and it could be interesting to see how many users will sign up for Twitter just solely to follow the updates from The Masters and then stick around to participate once they get the hang of how it works.
